True or false? [21 Mar 2010|02:24pm]

My mother says that although being vegan brings about lots of essential vitamins and minerals, only certain meat and animal products can allow absorption of these. Is this true or is she just trying to make me convert back? Again.

This week has been very eventful. I took the love of my life to a concert, Muse, for his birthday. It was actually really awesome even though I barely knew the music. We had a good time. Then next day was his last hockey game before playoffs. He did a good job and I was proud of him :) Then the next day was his actual birthday. I had to work late but went to see him and things ended up kind of rough and I felt terrible about it. We hung out with his parents and he talked me into staying extra late when they went to bed and we started talking about ex's. The next day was really hard for both of us. Wednesday was St. Patrick's day and we didn't go out, we spent some alone time. He made some really yummy chicken and spaghetti for dinner. Thursday we went to see the Aquabats! It was really fun! He liked it but said they were goofy, which is true. He recognized a couple of songs too lol. Then Friday was Motorcity Josh, the same band we saw for his Dad's birthday. THey didn't play as well as last time, but the one bad singer guy didn't sing this time, and we had a lot of fun and good dinner with his family in Royal Oak so it was cool. His Dad called Erin on the way home and said we were going to their house to party and she said no because it was bedtime, plus Hayden was home sleeping. Well we went there anyway as a joke and it was pretty funny. I like his family, they are fun and I get along with them pretty well. Today is Saturday. I stayed home to get some stuff done but it didn't work out as well as I had hoped. I applied for one job, but it's in New York. I really want a job but the whole relationship thing and my sister being alone make it really scary. I took more stuff off my walls too, it's almost time to clean them but I still have probably an hour left of taking stuff down and then I have to put it all into a book. My room looks a lot different. I want to move things around again too. I'm trying to go through things too. It's so hard to manage time these days. I spend as much time with Jt as possible and I have to like talk myself into being away from him. I really want to live with him, but I'm not sure how bad. I kind of want to be married first. But I love him so much and it's so hard spending time away from him. Well he just got here so I goota go say hi :D

sorry, i know i sound whiny/complainy lol...it's just so hard here in taiwan, living abroad, and adhering to veganism.

one has to be so SUPER careful...things like breads can almost always contain eggs!
i especially like puddings and ice cremes a lot, and soy versions are not abundant. however, soy milk, peanut milk, and other variants of MILK are eeeeverywhere. so...anyway, i want to really adhere strongly to this lifestyle, any suggestions on how to keep on..keeping on?

by the way, just curious to know if anyone has ever done a FRUIT fast? like, gone a day, or a week, just fruits and fruit juices...i've been researching this a lil bit and it sounds like a nice detox / way to get health back, and clear the mind.

what are people's opinions?

Ex-Vegan Author Pied By Anarchists [19 Mar 2010|02:34pm]

I haven't read the book, does anyone who has have thoughts on this?

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2010/03/16/MNGI1CGM1H.DTL&tsp=1

(03-16) 18:30 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- An ex-vegan who was hit with chili pepper-laced pies at an anarchist event in San Francisco said Tuesday that her assailants were cowards who should direct their herbivorous rage at the powerful - not at a fellow radical for writing a book denouncing animal-free diets.

Lierre Keith, a 45-year-old Arcata resident, was attacked at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at the 15th annual Bay Area Anarchist Book Fair while discussing her 2009 book, "The Vegetarian Myth." A 20-year vegan, Keith now argues that the diet is unhealthy and that agriculture is destroying the world.

As Keith stood at a lectern at the Hall of Flowers in Golden Gate Park, three people in masks and black hooded sweatshirts ran from backstage, shouted, "Go vegan!" and threw pies in her face. While they fled, some in the audience cheered or handed out leaflets.

The attack, midway through a 30-minute talk, was captured on a video posted to YouTube and prompted blistering debates on radical Web sites.

Many people defended Keith - or at least her right not to be attacked. Others said she was dishonest and abusive to vegans and should not have been invited by the event organizer, San Francisco's Bound Together bookstore.

Police are investigating the incident but have made no arrests, a spokesman said. Keith said she did not go to a hospital and was able to speak at a second engagement later Saturday, but had sore eyes for a few days and developed an ear infection.

"The whole thing was designed for social humiliation," said Keith, speaking Tuesday from her sister's home in Kansas. "We're supposed to be against sadism and cruelty and domination, and these people were willing to do this to me."

Keith said her values are similar in most ways to those of her attackers. She believes in militant action, even property destruction, if it can lead to change. In her book, she said, she railed against factory farming and promoted the restoration of prairies and forests.

"It's insane. My entire book is about how the world is being destroyed," Keith said. She said the first pie hit her just after she uttered the sentence, "You should not eat factory-farmed meat."

Among those rejoicing in the pie attack was the North American Animal Liberation Press Office, which often prints communiques from activists taking credit for attacks on animal researchers.

The group said Keith was wrong about veganism, referred to her as an "animal holocaust denier," and scolded her for calling the "agents of state oppression" - the police.

Her assailants were "masked marvels" who "made their statement very eloquently and succinctly on behalf of the billions of animals she advocates killing," the group said.

Keith said the attack appeared to have been planned on Internet sites dedicated to veganism. She called it a case of infighting that harmed activist causes.

"If this is what is considered radical action," she said, "this movement is dead."

Crohn's & Celiac's disease? [19 Mar 2010|08:27am]

veganpeople

[affectionjunkie]
Due to an off topic thread debate that went on over here I am interested in knowing more about this and the points raised.

Personally I am a bit confused because we have many people come into my veg*n co-op specifically due to the dietary constrictions of crohn's/celiac's disease that were recommended to try vegan, gluten-free diets. We even specifically advertise to the crohn's/celiac's community for this reason.

Anyone in here have either of the above mentioned dietary conditions (or know somebody who does) and care to give some first hand info?

Slavery in Agriculture [19 Mar 2010|02:30pm]

I use the topic of human slavery/abuse in the meat industry often as an argument for veganism. I was wondering if anyone knows the extent of slavery and abuse in crop farming as well. I know it happens but I know very little about it compared to the meat industry, and I'd like to know what I'm talking about if someone uses that argument. Thanksss~

Michigan Meat Out [18 Mar 2010|02:56pm]

veganpeople

[asile_de_fou]
I don't know if anyone's posted this (I looked, so if it has been posted- please direct me), but the governor of Michigan proposed a Meat-out day- a day where they would not eat meat (March 20). Meatout Day

Then some people are retaliating and doing this instead because they feel like it is an attack on their way of life.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I really don't understand why this is such a problem... It's one day. It's not really any different from Catholics observing Lent and not eating meat on Fridays or Ash Wednesday... other than the fact that it's FEWER days.

Summer Volunteering/Work Abroad Programs and Veganism [18 Mar 2010|01:39pm]

[surlygrrrly]
I posted awhile ago asking for insight into volunteering in Haiti this summer, but got little response. The only suggestion was to work with Food For Life. I filled out an online application with them, but they have not so much as bothered to confirm they received it.

Does anyone have any experience with working in other countries? Can you suggest a good program ? Can you tell me what the food situation was like for a vegan?

I really need to get out of here and experience some greater reality.

Thanks for any useful info you guys have!

Please Help Dogs in Dolji, Romania [17 Mar 2010|12:40pm]

[ music | Yell Fire! - Michael Franti & Spearhead ]

From Romania Animal Rescue:

"Your assistance is needed to submit email letters to the Prefect of Dolj, Romania. The prefect is offering to propose or amend some articles of the Animal Protection Act. Unfortunately the only options being offered to "solve" the problem of stray dogs are adoption and euthanasia. In Romania, "euthanasia" is not reserved solely for the humane vet-administered means of ending a dog's life; leaving poisoned food in the streets, clubbing dogs in a burlap bag, and shooting them are all considered "euthanasia".

to those vegans who drink and celebrate St. patrick's Day by drinking [17 Mar 2010|09:31am]

favorite mixed drink to celebrate St. Patty's day? Recipes welcomed!

edit: I'll share one as an example. The McDonald's Shamrock shakes were a tradition with my family growing up, so I was bummed when I could no longer participate. Instead I created a vegan version I try to have every year with a chocolate twist! I combined the idea of a milkshake with a 'dirty girl scout' shot to make:

Vegan Chocolate Shamrockin' Shake
equal parts: kahula, creme de menthe, soy(or other) vegan milk
a shot of vodka (optional)
a scoop (or more) of vanilla vegan ice cream

mix in a blender and serve. If it starts to seperate, remix and reserve.

I've been thinking of going vegan off and on since I became veg about 5 years ago. )

Also, how do you deal with being vegan in college? I don't have any extra money, so I'd be relying solely on a meal plan, and nearly everything contains milk or eggs. What common things should I be avoiding that I might not realize aren't vegan? I know this is probably a very common question, and I apologize.

vitamins [15 Mar 2010|11:00pm]

veganpeople

[duckypoison]
Was going through the pharmacies to get myself b12-vitamins this weekend. I found one box of tablets which was called

"My choice vegeterian - suitable for vegetarians". It stated that no raw ingredients were animal derived.

Sooo, I was relived, bought it, came home and discovered gelatine as one of the filling ingredients. E40b was there, too, which according to several sites says that it's often from animal origin and, as a rule, from animal origin when in pills.

I'm going back tomorrow to return my vitamins but am also planning to write to the consumers support and control /Sweden.

Do, d'you guys know if gelatine is always out of the question for vegeterians? And is there a veggie option called 'gelatine' which actually isn't? Just want my facts double-checked for when I go tut them off

Edit: Happy ending, apparently there had been a mis-printing. Ha!

Non-toxic paint for crafts [15 Mar 2010|02:53pm]

veganpeople

[hellomarycakes]
I checked the arts/crafts tag but wasn't able to find anything.

I am by no means an artist or even particularly good at crafts, so I know virtually nothing about crafting companies.

I was wondering if someone could direct me to a company that provides vegan-friendly paint for simple wood-based crafting projects (the kind of stuff kids would do). I know I've heard discussion of the use of bone char, gelatin, etc. in paints - is this something that is more the exception or the rule? I've never purchased anything like this before so I am unfortunately very uneducated on the topic. I am not looking for high end materials at all, this is just a fun Easter project I'm working on, so any kind of paint at all will do, I just want to ensure it is vegan.

Bonus points if it is a widely available company with products that I can find at any crafting store.

Thanks in advance :)

So, follow up to my last post:

After eating out (at the Italian restaurant) I experienced extreme indigestion all night, to the point where I couldn't get to sleep. I ordered a pasta dish with tomato basil sauce and vegetables. The waiter told me there was so egg in the particular pasta I got, and there was no dairy or meat (that I could see) in the sauce. I've obviously eaten pasta with vegetables before, so it's not like this is entirely unfamiliar to my system. Does anyone know what could have caused this?

hi! just out of curiosity.
some people tell me that gelato is non dairy....is there a truth to that? it would be awesome if it were true! imean. indulging in cookies n cream and mint chip would be totally awesome in a socially acceptible situation with friends

what about mochi ice cream at a sushi restaurant?

and i was in an indian restaurant yesterday with friends and they say that their milk tea/boba tea is nondairy...yet they don't even know what kind of milk they use!!! i was listing off things such as soy...rice...almond...and they just didn't even know just that it was nondairy....so would anyone know what Indian milk tea/boba tea is?? it dosn't include tapioca does it?? and i'm assuming tapioca is dairy or egg related?

thanks!!!

[pseudomanitou]
false arguments for veganism...

A pet peeve of mine:
I don't like many people saying that if you go vegan, you'll live longer.

That's a false statement -- there are no guarantees like that in a life full of so many random factors. I've been vegan for seven years now, but I could still get hit by (another) bus while bicycling and be dead by tomorrow.

If I died by accidental cause, then the statement that going vegan for a longer life becomes a regret -- as in, "he could have eaten whatever he wanted if only he had known he'd die so early".

The truth is, you can't extend your life so much that it becomes a part of your cause. But you can say that going vegan increases the quality of your life, however long that life may be.

...that's all I had to say.

so im back [15 Mar 2010|12:52am]

[slashycity]
Ive been away a while, still vegan though, anyhow, i just felt the need to rant.

About three weeks ago now, i found a kitten in the neighbour's chicken shed, too young to be away from its mother, really skinny and dehydrated...grabbed it (got shredded), watered, fed, groomed, took to the vet, got him his shots, microchipped him (will desex when he turns six months, i dont like to have it done before, health risks and really NO need as all our other cats are desexed and nobody is allowed outside).

Anyhow, i figured this kitten (his name is Anubis) was just a stray that wandered in, but oh no, the neighbours' son had brought it home from work and because it was not friendly immediately they decided to just leave it there and not feed it, so they were basically killing it...i was SO pissed off but im really not sure what i can do about that kind of thing...im guessing i should also probably report them for the state of their rabbit hutch/chicken coop, it doesnt exactly look clean, and they are the saddest sorriest looking rabbits and chickens ive seen in a while...then again they are only there for food.

any suggestions?

*edit*

PS. Kitten is teething and seems to only want to chew my hand, anyone else here had any success with vegan teething aids for kitties?
